When & Where

Saturday, April 22, 2006 8:30am to 5pm.

Friday Evening Drinks+

To properly prepare for the Saturday sessions, we have arranged to meet Friday evening for drinks and conversation, at the Fox & Feather (main floor) at 283 Elgin Street, from 7:02pm. We hope to see you there

iPod Nano Giveaway

Gowlings has offered a free Nano to the best presenter. ?? Whatever happened to this?

  • RyanLowe: I vote for DevShopDemo by Craig Fitzpatrick
  • AlecSaunders: We thought about it quite a bit, and decided (last minute... sorry) to give the iPod back to Gowlings. Didn't seem to be in keeping with the spirit of Barcamp. We didn't want to make it into a competition to get a free iPod.

Format

  • Casual & interactive
  • Starbucks coffee in the morning, pizzas for lunch & drinks in the afternoon are provided, thanks to our sponsors!

Scheduled Sessions

Barcamp is about participation and discussion. Below is a list of some of the presentations that are already scheduled but feel free to add yours (Click Edit Page & Log On). We'll have projectors, screens & white boards. Bring a laptop, memory stick or what ever you need to illustrate your points - PowerPoint, Demos', code snippets or what ever - to engage participants.

Sessions are 40 minutes, but with an active audience, probing insights and both you and the audience involved in Q&A a 15 or so minute presentation is all that needed to start the discussion.

Proposed Sessions

What do you want to talk and learn about?

  • How about a Voice 2.0 presentation / panel discussion?
  • How about beyond the cliche voice 2.0 to speculation on the future of personal/business communication as a decentralized federation of heterogeneous systems.
  • How about a discussion of patents and strategy around patents?
  • Online communities, how to build & sustain them, encouraging participation etc.
  • The web & media would be interesting - especially developing cross medium media experiences
  • serendipity or hysteria- context, presence, relevance, tigers, oh my!
  • Blogging and Customer Relations
  • CSS 3 & Ajax (Vlad M.)
  • I've been mulling over a potential discussion on either challenges associated with blog technology in an enterprise, and/or why published content (whether from a blog, CMS, or wiki) needs to project different views depending on the context (e.g. based on language, inside/outside firewall, identity, etc.) I'm not sure I have enough for a full talk.Feedback is welcome. (GavinMcKenzie, gmckenzi@gavinmckenzie.com)
  • Wiki, MediaWiki, Semantic Wiki, microformats and Wiki - Evan Prodromou Wysiwyg,
  • Software Effort & Schedule Estimation - COCOMO  - James S.
  • Code quality
  • Anyone want to talk about the end of the world? The Singularity as described by Ray Kurzweil
  • How about a session on cool ideas for web apps that we just don't have time to do - maybe someone *has* the time?

Questions

  • Getting to Ottawa - anyone from TO interested in renting a car? Or are we riding RV style with Mr. Morin

  • Will there be a WiFi connection available? - Yes. Free WiFi. Bring your laptops.

  • How long should the sessions/presentations be? Plan for 40 mins each (total). For those leading a session, plan on presenting for 15 minutes and then leading a discussion for the balance!

  • What is the capacity (# people) for each of the four rooms? Some topics can be expected to have smaller attendance (though no garantee of course)

  • Is there a summary for those of us who missed it this time?

  • When is the next one planned for?

... is there a next one in planning?

Questions from Moi - Abdul

Who and how do I get the names of the Ottawa area wikis and associated passwords so I can add them to my pbwiki and not have to search for them everytime. From what I've gleaned so far, the wikis seem to be as follows (correct me if I'm wrong)

BarCampOttawa / BarCampOttawa-1 / BarCampOttawa-2 / DemoCampOttawa-1 / DemoCampOttawa-2 / DemoCampOttawa-3
