A6: We would love your help!  Check out the website and check out the "Volunteer" section and the "Needs" section... we have some volunteer slots to fill on the day of the event, plus still some things we need to get done beforehand.  (FYI... we are all volunteers for this event, so your help would be extra-appreciated!)

"Openness" provides many benefits in education, society and social development, technology, innovation, government, the business world, civil society, arts and creativity, intellectual development, and much much more.  "Closed systems", "closed minds", obsessive protection, and hording of information and knowledge all slow down innovation, ideas, and development.

To help promote "openness" in various contexts, we are organizing our very own "OpenSesame BarCamp-Lebanon" in Beirut on February 28.  (More info below.)  Through this event we are providing a forum to discuss open source technology initiatives (like Linux, Apache, WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, OpenOffice, OpenSocial, etc), collaborative problem solving, Creative Commons and intellectual property in Lebanon and the region, open business models, Arabic on the web and collaborative sites (like Wikipedia, etc), and more.  Please join us!

Who should come?  Technology developers, entrepreneurs, students, lawyers, teachers, artists, bloggers, journalists, product and graphic designers, and anyone interested in social, political, or economic development wanting to learn more, share knowledge, and meet interesting people.  (We are also looking for some talented lawyers to help with a Creative Commons translation/adaptation project for Lebanon. Please let me know if you might be interested, or know of someone who might be interested.  It takes a bit of volunteer work, but it is also a great way to promote a lawyer or firm interested in intellectual property rights law.)

Exciting competitions, with prizes, are in the works for the BarCamp on Feb 28!  Door prizes and giveaways are also in the works, so be sure to sign up below, and be sure to come to the event early that day!  Also, be sure to put your shirt size on the registration form below so we can order enough shirts for everybody...

... and YES!  Shirts+Giveaways+Lunch+Great Company+Great Ideas+Good Time=Free, but only for those who sign up below before Feb 24.

Calling All Bloggers, Writers, Twitterers, Taggers, etc. (use tag: "barcamp-lebanon")

In order to make all blog/twitter/facebook postings related to this event searchable, please tag everything with: "barcamp-lebanon".  Thanks!

7 "Arabizing" the web

Getting more people in Lebanon (and Arab World) involved/contributing to wikipedia and other open/collaborative projects (in Arabic, English, etc... esp Arabic).

David Munir Nabti
3 Building the Cluster...  what needs to be done to have open source (development, use, etc) flourish in Lebanon?  where are some of the key gaps? DMN

Survival Guides

Developing a Lebanese student resource and survival guide website (a collaborative mini wiki ex. http://students.wikia.com/wiki/Students_Wikia) where they could find practical tips/answers/ideas to succeed in their first years at university (how to take notes, how to do a quick/efficient online research, how to write a bibliography, how to write a research paper, how to build a good reading list, how to prepare for a final exam, etc…)

3 Promoting Open Source

shows the critical value of using open source software to develop Arab media , and begin a concerted effort to promote open source software in the Arab media, to help create centres of excellence.

3 Entering Sesame Networking media professionals, trainers, organizations, funders; aggregating, translating training materials Jessica Dheere
3 Creating synergies how can startups, developers and entrepreneurs in lebanon and the region help each other out by sharing and benefiting from each other's ressources: office space, infrastructure, technology, experience, contacts, costs ... Sami Tueni
3 Placing Lebanon on the Digital Map With the exponential growth of the web, use of open source technology, access to "free/open" data and knowledge, everyone now has the tools to compete in this global market. The region is increasingly active online and startups are spurring all over with very exciting and innovative services. What needs to be done to turn Lebanon into a regional online powerhouse? How do we stimulate innovation? How do we attract investments? How do we bring talent back to the country? Sami Tueni
2 OpenStreetMap Lebanon

OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a collaborative mapping initiative to create a free ediable map of the whole world (think wikipedia for geographic data), using GPS devices, aerial photography or other map sources. OSM has been active in Lebanon for two years now, and the map is starting to take shape. I intend to give a short crash course introducing the attendees to the project, performing live mapping operations and showcasing some common gadgets we use. Will follow a discussion regarding topics such as 'can we trust the wisdom of the crowds', 'what does freeing public mapping data infer' and 'what are potential ramifications of the project for Lebanon'.

1 Intellectual Property Laws /Copyright reform/Creative Commons licenses for beginners

What does copyright mean in the digital media? how can we protect our work while sharing it legally?how can we improve innovation and creativity on the Internet by encouraging sharing -and legal protection of our work at the same time-?

Donatella Della Ratta

1 Where to from here?  Assuming this BarCamp is an amazing AMAZING success, as I'm sure it will be... ;-) where to from here?  There are already discussions around future BarCamps around (in no particular order) (1) education (fostering critical thinking, creative problem solving, tech, and innovation in Lebanon's  system (development of a knowledge-based, tech-enabled, innovative population); (2) human rights and technology (possibly to coincide with a large HR-Tech conference in May hosted at UC Berkeley, linked up by videoconference....); (3) green-tech, green energy.  Which ideas do you like?  What other ones should be considered?  Since BarCamp is an open platform, and since anyone can organize a BarCamp anywhere, how could/should we proceed? (also, def want to organize some outside of Beirut) (we already set up http://barcamp.org/BarCampLebanon ... what else?) David Munir Nabti
1 Creative Commons for the media: how can broadcasters, filmakers and film schools use the licenses?

Creative Commons for professionals and amateurs in the media. How the licenses can be used by broadcasters and filmakers. What are the advantages for film schools and educational institutions in the media field.

Focus on case studies coming out from the Arab region, like the Al Jazeera Creative Commons footage repository.

Donatella Della Ratta
2 The sad state of Arabic web typography Fonts are difficult to manage on the web regardless of language, but Arabic fonts are in a particularly disappointing state. The ugliness of the few available fonts combined with the lack of standardization across platforms makes it almost impossible to ensure a consistent (or even predictable) user experience on Arabic websites. What can we, as Arabic speaking developers, do to put the Arabic internet on par with the rest of it? Ramsey Nasser
2 Standards based web template engine Large websites generated by PHP scripts often use some kind of template engine for long term maintainability. I have developed my own tool to this effect that I would like to share with the development community. My engine promotes web standards and uses syntax taken from existing web technologies such CSS, jQuery and XML DOM in an effort to "recycle knowledge" and make it easy to learn. It is still in alpha and a bit rough around the edges, although it is stably deployed on several of my clients' sites and my own. It can be found atcode.ramseynasser.com/fiddle/ Ramsey Nasser
2 Why is Lebanese broadband internet so crippled? Compared to connections in other countries, Lebanon's DSL plan is disappointing to say the least. Not only are speeds well below western averages, users are constrained by two different limits: we pay monthly, but our bandwidth is capped as well! Is there any good reason for this? Maybe someone in the shadow government could shed some light on the issue (no pun intended) Ramsey Nasser
1 An Open (or More Open) Political System in Lebanon?  Tech tools to the rescue (at least partially?)? A special look (or a separate session?) on ELECTION TECH.
We need a more effective, accountable, transparent political system in Lebanon.  How is the government shaping up, improving, and applying tech tools to help in the process? What are some big gaps? What tech tools are being used by civil society in Lebanon to promote these efforts? Some already exist (such as the Leb Parliamentary Monitor), but what more could be done to promote a fair, clean, balanced, efficient, and effective government? How could such technologies be used to expand the participation and impact of citizens and civil socity? What models can we look to elsewhere in the world? (Also check out eDemocracyCamp2).  With Parliamentary Elections around the corner (June 7), let's maybe take a special look at election/tech tools... David Munir Nabti
State of computer/software education in Lebanon and the Arab region Across the globe all technological hubs spur around universities but such a phenomenon is yet to appear in Lebanon or in any Arab country for that matter. Could the situation stem from a lacking educational system? Specifically how well prepared are the students that are coming out when it comes to fundamentals be it in hardware or software theory/paradigms? Should a new approach be tackled and if so how? Your experiences in the workforce might shed light on what we should be pushing for. Mackram Raydan

Lebanese Talent & Expert Knowledge

(unclogging the brain drain)

Bla bla bla, and then some more, although I agree with all the above, the biggest issue i'm facing (day in day out in everything from photography, to banking, to web development, to senior management, to women) is the lack of talented or specialized or expert Lebanese.  Wars and cowardice has left this country dry of people who really push the envelope (who are not consultants).  How do we locate such people?  How do we bring them to / back to Lebanon if need be?  How do we challenge them?  How do we keep their egos in check? ... bla bla Samer Karam
3 Writing a How To Startup for Dummies
Perhaps with the coming of great minds we could write a quick 'How-To' on setting up a Startup in Lebanon.  This could involve, IP, Legal, Funding, Talent, Infrastructure, Support, Etc.  We could publish this as an artifact of the first BarCamp, and opensauce it on a wiki for continuous refinement. Samer Karam

IPTV & DRM (Digital Rights Management)  Distribution of television programs and other content over the Internet and digital rights management (DRM), how are media companies guaranteed that the content is protected?  Ramzi G. Baramki

laptop for the sessions  not started

my laptop died and I need to borrow a laptop to live blog during the event. (Who wrote this? Please put your name. -DMN) 'DMN' sounds too much like DMZ, does it stand for de-militarized n00b? hehe  if all else fails, i can lend a laptop, but it is clean formatted. needs a full OS install (can't be bothered) (Samer Karam) (DMN: "DeMilitarized Nabti?" Sounds accurate, but strange! ;-)  )

I have an old(5 year-ish) dell latitude available. It runs gentoo linux, has a hard drive that is about to die and has awful battery life(as in 20min or so). It does however connect to the internet quite fine. I can bring it along with my thinkpad(a T400, couple of months old). I am fine with using the dell if battery life is an issue for you. The thinkpad runs ubuntu and has about 3 to 4hr of battery life. Let me know if I should bring the dell and if battery life is an issue - Raja

The volunteer schedules were changed I see but the number of people needed were not updated to reflect this. So, is the change valid, is there a need for all the open slots available or are the numbers correct and the additional slots bogus? I can help with the close down but I previously thought all the slots had been filled. Let me know if I should update the numbers to reflect the amount of open slots and add myself to the volunteers for the close-down or remove the bogus slots.

- Raja

Security & Voting System(by: Serge)?

This is just a comment from a user of this site.  Am really wondering about the Security of this site and how easy it is to actually turn this into a scrap whole.  I think the user has to much power under his wing.  One bored user can turn this website into scrap in seconds.  The voting system is quite lame no offense ^_^. You can add any number why increment it by one ? Add to it 9347598437 :D your topic is a winner ^_^.  That's all from me, am not sure if your working on a new website and this one is just to get the idea moving and stuff.  Anywayz i like to thank the peoplewho are making this possible.  I would like to thank all the users that are backing them up as well. Good day everybody ^_^

~Serge

Serge: You are right, this site has no security, and we are going by trust, supporting open collaboration, etc.  Four things... (1) I have made several backups. (2) Changes are registered (see the page history button upper right). (3) There is nearly no incentive for someone to lie, since (for example) it makes no difference what your topic ranking is, anyway... the schedule will be created the morning of the event, regardless of what is on the list above. And lastly, (4) People have more incentive to be distrustful if you exhibit distrust for them (within limitations, of course, and along with reducing the incentives to be distrustful).  And I guess (5) is, yes, this is an experiment!  We'll see how it goes, but 74 people signed up, no blatant signs of people trying to cheat the system... so far so good!   Hope to see you on Saturday! Cheers, DMN
