== Early Discussions ==

== Required Equipment ==

  • A box to put things in
  • 1 Switch?
  • 1 Router (w/ nat)
    • PFSense is a good BSD distribution for this
    • DHCP Service
  • Many Access Points
    • B-mode only
    • Layer 2 Bridging only
      • Set the wireless APs to "bridge only" mode (or, if they don't have such a mode, leave the "internet" socket empty, plug the LAN into the "local" side, and turn off DHCP--this has the same effect on every one I've tried).
      • Run a DHCP server on a separate machine. Mac, Linux box, Windows box, whatever.
      • Run the wired firewall on a separate machine and/or the router for the upstream wired connection.
    • Different antenna alternatives
    • Talk Radios (Can you hear me now?)
    • Good hardware combo - three WRT54GL configured on channels 1, 6, 11, all same SSID, using sveasoft firmware, but don't turn up antenna power.

== Machines ==

  • Pentium M based server boards
  • Compact Flash IDE adapters (for root filesystem and critical systems)
  • Compact Flash cards (less than 512mb should be fine)
  • Laptop IDE drives for Squid cache and other application storage

== Colo ==

  • Acquire a rackmount (Cliff might have a box)
  • Acquire colocation (MattPeterson can do this)

== Cables and Misc ==

  • UPS
  • Electrical cables
    • power strips
    • extension cords
    • 2-to-3 prong adapters
  • Patch cables
  • 100ft ethernet cables
  • velcro cable ties
  • crossover adapter/cables
  • gaffer's tape/painters tape
  • Speaker stands to elevate access points

== Transparent Network Service ==

  • Squid
  • PF QoS (Packet Shaping)
  • SOCKS proxy
  • SMTP forwarding
    • What other services need forwarding, if we can't do VPN to the colo?
  • VPN (where P is Public)
  • dnsmasq
  • Captive portal

== Services worth supporting ==

== Potential Network Hazards ==

  • Freenode IRC limits N clients
  • Sensitive IDS devices.

== Cleanup and Teardown ==

  • Shutdown and clean up software scripts: cleanup of local machine.
  • After events, all necessary data (audio archives) should have been shipped off to the colo beforehand.
